Plate Mill Modernisation Port Kembla
BlueScope invests $300 Million in plate mill modernisation
BlueScope has received Board and NSW Government Planning approval for a $300 million Plate Mill Modernisation Project at Port Kembla Steelworks. Modernising the mill will ensure that Port Kembla not only produces higher-quality plate but also increases production capacity to better support key industries.
The Plate Mill Modernisation Project will deliver:
- the installation of a new modern walking beam furnace
- the development of an additional heavy plate processing route
- enhanced product quality and customer experience
- increased capacity to 470,000 tons per year
- reduced emissions intensity and improved process efficiency
Upon completion, Australia’s sovereign manufacturing capabilities will be markedly enhanced, supporting critical industries such as renewable energy, defence, and major infrastructure. The project will expand the mill’s current production to 470,000 tonnes of plate per year, ensuring a stronger and reliable supply.
Tania Archibald, Chief Executive of Australian Steel Products at BlueScope, highlighted the benefits for customers, "The modernised facility will deliver a step-change in service reliability and quality for our customers. The service enhancements are expected to be online by the end of calendar 2025."
This project marks a significant milestone in BlueScope’s ongoing commitment to local steel production, strengthening Australia’s manufacturing capabilities and delivering long-term economic benefits.
